Reflection on The Environmental Geography of Beef

Image
Reflection on The Environmental Geography of Beef  I will be addressing the solutions to the negative environmental impacts of beef production on a global, local, and micro (household) scale. As an introduction, I will briefly talk about the negative impacts beef has on the environment that I talked about in my last post. Beef production has negatively impacted the environment by over-grazing fields, contributing to mass deforestation by planting food for cattle, soil degradation by planting the same food for cattle over and over again, contaminating the air and water from cattle waste, contributing to plastic waste when beef is transported and packaged, and contributing to mass amounts of greenhouse gases, which in turn depletes our ozone layer.      The first scale I will be addressing is global, and what we can do on a global scale to reduce the environmental impacts of beef production. For this section, I found two resources that ha...

The Environmental Impacts of my Chipotle Burrito

Image
The Environmental Impacts of my Chipotle Burrito                  I will be discussing the environmental impacts of two ingredients that I had in my Chipotle burrito. Those two ingredients are steak and cilantro                The first ingredient I will be talking about is steak. I will be discussing topics including where it was produced, if chemicals and/or fossil fuels were involved in the production of my product, if my product contributed to carbon dioxide emissions, what are the local and global impacts of my product, how did the product get to me, how far did it travel to get to me, and what kind of waste does my product produce. First talking about where my product was produced, Chipotle gets their beef from farms in the United States and Australia. I did some research on the biggest beef producers in the Unit...

Chipotle Burrito

Image
Chipotle Burrito      A recent meal that I ate was a burrito from Chipotle for a late lunch early dinner. It was this last Sunday and I just got done with a 2-day Ultimate Frisbee tournament in Hartland. I was so tired and hungry so I thought a good hardy burrito would fill me up, it also sounded really good. What I put in my burrito included white rice with cilantro in it, black beans, cut-up steak, queso, cheese, lettuce, guacamole (avocados, tomatoes, red onions, lime juice), and the burrito itself which is made from flour, water, and oil (most likely olive oil). I chose all these things because one, they sounded good and they were all things I enjoyed eating, and two because they were great foods to eat to refuel you after running around all day for two days and using up all your energy.    Here is an article that talks about 9 disappointing facts about Chipotle and their food use/where they get their food.  https://certifiedhumane.org/9-disappointing-f...

The Plastic Bag

Image
The Plastic Bag  After watching the video Battle of the Bags, I learned about an effect that involved plastic bags that I didn’t know about until now. In the video, they were discussing the plastic bag issue in Nairobi. They explained how people used plastic bags as toilets and threw them into the street. They did this because there was little plumbing and very few toilets in the community in Nairobi, so they used plastic bags as makeshift toilets. The effect of this is when they throw the plastic bags in the sewers, they clog up waterways and the plastic bags saturated in waste sit there. This can cause the perfect breeding ground for diseases, like malaria. Along with the increased risk for disease, plastic bags are cutting off the water supply to people in the community and contaminating it, so they can’t drink from that water or use it for other essential needs. Another effect of plastic bags is that the land can’t be used anymore because of the mixture of soil and plastic. So,...
